Decoding the "Trump Doctrine": The Shayrat Strike and the Erosion of International Law

Image
They fractured the sanctity of international law, replacing it with a Hobbesian state of nature governed by the law of the jungle—where the most powerful dictate right from wrong, and the lives of ordinary people in the Middle East remain permanently expendable pawns on an endless geopolitical chessboard. The launch of 59 Tomahawk missiles at Syria’s Shayrat Airbase on April 6, 2017, was far more than a tactical strike rattling the Middle East. It served as a historical watershed—a defining flashpoint that laid bare the core mindset and logic driving Donald Trump’s foreign policy. This intervention marked a critical pivot from traditional isolationism toward unvarnished unilateral militarism. Grasping this underlying logic is essential, not merely for assessing past crises, but for decoding the assertive, strongman dynamics of American power that continue to mold today’s global order. Deconstructing the Trump administration's decision-making architecture during the Syrian...

Over tea, they forge a pact that would quietly engineer the geopolitical architecture of the next eight decades: American military protection in exchange for guaranteed access to Saudi energy. Today, the US-Saudi alliance is frequently mischaracterized as a mere transactional exchange of oil for security. In reality, it is a masterclass in Realpolitik —a resilient strategic partnership where shared adversaries and regional stability consistently outmaneuver ideological friction and cultural tension. The Architecture of Realpolitik To understand this alliance, one must trace its evolution from a dependent protectorate to a proactive power broker: The 1973 Oil Embargo: Riyadh weaponized energy exports, proving that oil is not just a commodity, but a coercive geopolitical tool. The 1979 Iranian Revolution: The rise...
